Lenford Adkins
15 Sept 1915 – 22 April 1982

Lenford married Madge June Martin. Together they had 4 children. Donald Lynn Adkins (Sue Gilliam), Ronald Lee Adkins (Sherry Smith), Carolyn Gaye Adkins Brooks (Robert),and Terra Alise Adkins Newsome (James). 10 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren. He never meet his last two Grandchildren or any of the rest of the Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren. Lenford was the oldest of 16 children he had 7 brothers and 8 sisters one sister died in infancy. He was always close to all of his family parents, grandparents, siblings, niece's and nephews. He always took the kids on hikes in the hills behind his house on Indian Creek of Virgie where he made his home. He always visited his aunts and uncles that lived near but some seemed like it took a long time to get there. He became a Christian at an early age and was a very humble man. He belonged to the CCC and worked building roads in state parks mostly Mammoth Cave, he told stories about clearing for road and shelters and paths in the cave and him cooking and serving the food in the Snowball Room inside of the cave. While he was in the CCC the Three C’s he called it he sent his pay home to his parents he said. He went to Mayo Vocational school and took welding. He joined the Navy and was stationed in Norfolkk, VA he was a cook and learned to cut meat. He did welding in the shipyard in Norfolk ,VA. He worked construction work with one of his Uncles Louis Dupount he was married to Papaws sister Nannie He worked in TX, Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio and he worked on Bridges in LA. He talked about the one in Baton Rouge the crossed the Mississippi River. He worked in the coal mines to raise his family for almost 40 years. He had a small farm on Indian Creek where he raised a garden had farm animals for food Cows and pigs a work horse or pony to plow with. He had a little Massy Ferguson Pony farm tractor he would cut metal and weld and make blades for the tractor to do jobs on the farm and put the kids in a wagon up in the holler. He always had bees and loved watching them work and hunting bee trees with his brother Warren G. When something was in bloom he would take his binoculars and look to see if the bees were working it and to put a extra super on the hive for a particular bloom like poplar or Lin. Lin was his favorite it is a very light mild honey. He enjoyed feeding honey and biscuts to his grandchildren. He had a very nurturing personality about him, he would take care of the sick. Most people said he had a way with little children and old people.
